Felt picnic basket
******* Price 1100 Euro

Lucy Sparrow is a young British artist who creates small felt sculptures. It portrays commonly used objects, such as those found in pantries. It is therefore not surprising that he has, over time, sold these small works of art in shops created for the occasion and which tried to reproduce, as faithfully as possible, real mini-markets. But in her latest installation, created this summer on the fourth floor of the Standard Hotel Downtown LA in Los Angeles (which I have already talked about here), Sparrow has outdone herself. The project created, in fact, an 80s-style supermarket, was gigantic with its shelves cluttered with 31 thousand handmade felt sculptures. For a total of over 854 square meters occupied. At the Sparrow Mart in Los Angeles there was everything from fruit and vegetables to meats and cold cuts to snacks and canned goods. A few shelves of video cassettes (as used in the 80s) and then cereals, sweets, soft drinks, liqueurs, cleaning and personal hygiene products. Not to mention a consistent variety of ethnic products: sushi alone appeared in 27 variations (300 pieces of each were made)! Every small single sculpture was made by hand. Lucy Sparrow did everything herself until a few days before leaving when she was forced to hire staff to complete the job on time. Sparrow Mart has temporarily withdrawn, but the artist is considering a similar project in Chicago, Dallas, Melbourne or somewhere in Asia (e.g. Hong Kong or Tokyo).
